Botanical Gardens in Italy

Over the centuries Italian gardeners and horticulturists have made large contributions to botany and gardens. Although not a complete list of gardens open to the public (some are only by appointment) we have tried to furnish as many as possible. In 1997 an Englishwoman living in Italy, Judith Wade, was instrumental in forming the association "I Grandi Giardini Italiani", and has published a book with Maria Brambilla with photos and details of the gardens belonging to the organization. Brusiglio, near Milan, was created by Alessandro Manzoni, legendary author of "I Promessi Sposi" (The Betrothed) read by all Italian schoolchildren, on a property left to him by his mother. He was an enthusiastic gardener and botanist, creating vineyards and planting fruit trees, as well as mulberry trees (for silk), ornamental herbs, and all kinds of plants and bushes. It is not a garden in the traditional sense, but rather an enormous park with a lengthy walkway. Trees and bushes include magnolia, mimosa, maple, hydrangea, lilac, and begonias. He procured seeds from abroad and traded them with friends. Today the property is owned by the Marchese Berlinghieri and can be visited by appointment. Orto Botanico Lorenzo Rota, Bergamo Alto, a relatively unknown botanical garden near the city of Bergamo has over 900 varieties of plants and flowers, celebrates its 30th birthday in 2002.
