Introduction to Naples
In the last century Naples was an obbligatory stop on the Grand Tour of Europe for the well-bred youth of America and Europe. For the last two decades Naples has been ignored by many travelers, but the 1995 Economic Summit was held there and the city, led by a very active mayor Antonio Bassolino, put on its very best face. Founded by Hellenic immigrants of the 6th century BC who spread all over southern Italy creating what is today called Magna Grecia, Naples absorbed culture from Greece, Rome, Norman, Anjou, Saracen, Aragon, France, Spain, Bourbon, all of whom ruled the city at some time. Naples and Capri are well worth visiting but it's only fair to warn you that, like in many Italian cities, there's a lot of petty crime. Leave your jewelry in the hotel safe, your passport, tickets, and pricy accessories in your room, and be extremely careful with cameras, videos, and any other expensive equipment. Carry only a minimum of cash and one credit card for any shopping. Never leave a purse on the seat of a car, even if locked, as thieves have been known to smash the window if necessary.
Introduction to Capri
It was the 26th year after the birth of Christ when Emperor Riberius decided to leave Rome and move to Capri where he built his fantastic residence. According to Svetonius "he gave vent to all the vices which he had for this long time tried unsuccessfully to hide." He spent most of his time in Villa Jovis, perched on the precipitous northeast tip of the island. amd according to Suetonius persons who incurred his disfavor were cast to their death from what is called "Il Salto" (The leap). On arriving in Capri you are immediately assailed by the perfume of jasmine and the bright colors of the bouganvilia as you take the short cable-car ride from the port to the Piazzetta, the hub of life on the island. Hedonism is in the air, and for centuries Capri has attracted all kinds of unconventional couples.
