Jean Paul Troili was born in Poggio Nativo, province di Sabina, on December 6, 1947 to a family of landowners just north of Rome. As a young man he dreamed of becoming a home decorator, but one day he found himself in Italy's largest department store La Rinascente when famed makeup artist Paolo Zappi Manzoni was presending Elizabeth Arden's latest makeup. "I was stunned to watch the clients sitting in the chair and being completely transformed by the talent of this artist," says Troili, "And I was determined from that moment to leave my studies of architecture and become a makeup artist."
"Paolo Manzoni became my friend and my maestro and his generosity in teaching me the secrets of his art made it possible for me to pursue my dream." After several months of study, Manzoni recommended Troili to replace him when he was transferred from the Elizabeth Arden salon in Rome to that of New York. Collaborations with the most prestigious fashion houses to make up the models for the presentation of the high fashion collections, starting with Valentino, followed by photo sittings with the most prestigious fashion magazines ensured a worldwide reputation.
Troili has worked with many of the most famous fashion models and photographers in the world, creating looks that have appeared on the covers of magazines such as Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, Cosmopolitan, L'Officiel, Seventeen, and others. Models he has worked with include Carol Alt, Iman, Christie Brinkley, Brooke Shields, Renee Simonsen, Jerry Hall, Claudia Schiffer, Linda Evangelista, Carla Bruni, and Margaux Hemingway. Actresses include Catherine Deneuve, Elizabeth, Taylor, Maria Callas, Farah Diba, Romy Schneider, Barbara Streisand, and Glenda Jackson. "She was a joy to make up, and told me that no makeup artist had ever molded her face the way I did."
The first photography sitting Troili ever did was with David Bailey, he went on to work with Barry Latigan, Hiro, Helmut Newton, Norman Parkinson, Oliviero Toscani, Bob Kreiger, Marco Glaviano, Patrick Demarchlier, Mike Rheinholt, Deborah Tuberville, the first photographer who asked him to make the models ugly rather than beautiful. He also worked with some of the most famous hairdressers in the world including Alexandre and Jean-Louis David, Leonard, Christophe, Aldo Coppola, Alba, Sergio Russo, and Sergio Valente.
From fashion it was a short hop to advertising specializing in ads for TV. "I had the pleasure of working with some of the most famous directors including Ridley Scott, David Lynch, Giuseppe Rotunno, Vittorio Storaro, Franco Zeffirelli, Mauro Bolognini, Marco Ferreri, and Luchino Visconti."
Jean Paul's love for his country home and for gardens and flowers led him to do the decoration for special events such as marriages and debut parties in some of the most beautiful palaces and homes in Italy. "In the end this has all lead me to accomplish my first dream, that of creating interiors. I'm now working on the homes in two old Roman palaces and a country home, which gives me a great deal of pleasure. My first love and work, however, is makeup."
